World of Warcraft is admittedly an awesome game. I played it for several years, long enough to get my human rogue to level 80. I never liked the group aspect of the game, however, so once I was done leveling, it got boring for me, and I gave it up. I moved on to other things – like writing, reading, crafts, playing other games.
My boyfriend, on the other hand, is a certified WoW addict. He can’t stop playing. He’s leveled three characters, gone through the process of getting them all the reputations and gear he wanted, run the biggest, baddest, hardest dungeons in the game. Now he’s taken over my rogue and has it geared to the max and spends ALL DAY playing the game.
He had sold his account to a friend, so I got a couple months of happy face time with him. It was nice to see something other than the back of his head. He’s unemployed right now, and he went through a stressful time a week or so ago when he was about to run out of unemployment with no job prospects in town and no sign of another government extension on unemployment benefits. So, he picked up my account and started playing again. I understand, its an escape to sit down and go to this other world for a while where in contrast to real life, you may be a rich, highly accomplished hero. It’s a relief from the real world’s stressors. I get that. But now, 13 week extension safely tucked away, he’s playing more than ever. The damn game got him again. Curse you, Blizzard! Give me back my boyfriend!
I find it amazing that this game can have this effect. I’m not the only WoW widow out there…there are online support groups for it. My boyfriend is certainly not the only addict out there…I think it numbers in the millions. I’ve had my bout with the addiction, and it happens quickly and it holds on tightly. The game is a digital drug. I wonder what would happen if I logged into my account and deleted that rogue. It’s only a game, and it shouldn’t matter. But it would.
